Everything you need to know about Setting Sprays and Makeup Fixers

The world of makeup is vast, and getting confused between the uses of products is more common than you would think. While some makeup products have multiple uses, being efficient multitaskers, some products have distinct uses that might need clarification due to their similar nature. For example, a lip tint might be primarily used for lips but can be used as a cheek tint/ blush. But there are certain products that despite their apparent similar nature are supposed to work differently. One such common confusion is between setting spray and makeup fixer.

What is a setting spray?

A setting spray just as its name, sets all layers of your makeup in place. Made in the form of a mist, it hydrates your skin after makeup. It gives the skin that soft, dewy finish and makes it look fresh.  Setting Sprays are made from nourishing ingredients like water, fruit extracts, natural oils, and glycerin. It works as a spritz of hydration that sets your makeup flawlessly, without looking cakey.

What is a makeup fixer?

On the other hand, a makeup fixer is supposed to keep your makeup intact throughout the day. It keeps your makeup in place while being moisture-resistant such as water and sweat and not melting by the heat. Its main ingredient is alcohol, which helps lock your makeup in its fresh glory, keeping your makeup smudge and transfer-proof. A makeup fixer is supposed to be applied only after your whole makeup routine is done so that long-stay of makeup is ensured.

Difference between Setting Sprays and Makeup Fixers

While they may sound similar, setting sprays and makeup fixers are two very different products. Setting sprays can be used before, after each layer of makeup, or even after the complete makeup routine is done. Contrary to that, a makeup fixer is applied ONLY AFTER makeup so that once applied, it fixes the makeup in place and hence, does not necessarily require frequent makeup touch-ups. Especially advantageous for people with oily skin, a makeup spray would keep the oil in control and hence, give you a flawless matte finish.

Difference in their Formulation
Another remarkable difference between the two is in the way they are made. A setting spray is made with soft, lighter, and water-based ingredients for the skin along with healthy oils and glycerin so that it can set your makeup without altering your appearance, whereas a makeup spray is made with heavier ingredients such as alcohol to boost the makeup’s stay time, for stronger durability.

While setting sprays are used when an extra layer of hydration after every makeup layer is applied, makeup fixers are applied at the end of the routine to completely lock and seal the makeup. Makeup fixers lock in the formulas of the makeup products used onto your face and give a more matte finish, whereas setting sprays lean towards a dewy finish, providing instant hydration.

Making the Right Choice

Understanding these differences is crucial to selecting the right product for your skin type and makeup needs. While both setting sprays and makeup fixers have their place in a makeup routine, choosing the right one can make a significant difference in achieving and maintaining your desired look.
